Cheers,
Simran

Subject of the email should be: National project, part time job.

Dear May Kuan,

Hi, I'm Amanda Khoo Yin Yen, working as an assistant for Prof Chin Kin Fah from UH. I was the one who called you the other day regarding the 30 part time job openings for medical students. Basically, this project is a point prevalence study headed by PENSMA (the parenteral & enteral nutrition society of Malaysia) where my professor whom i work for is involved. The details are as follow:

1. Work - Collect data from hospitals. Its a nutritional based study, students will be trained a day before data collection in a workshop organized by PENSMA where they will learn how to handle various measuring instruments, history taking, proper physical examination , analyzing data etc. After data collection, students will have to analyzed and present their data collected to the team.

2. Time- 1 day of training (workshop) and 5 days of data collection. Start early next year (2nd or 3rd week of January, yet to be confirmed)

3. Place- Hospitals around Malaysia. Can be posted anywhere, i.e Penang, Kedah, Johor, Seremban

4. Accomadation and transportation- All provided and paid for. Good accomadation conditions.

5. Salary- It's a paid job however not sure how much just yet. The company is still trying to negotiated fees.

6. Requirements- Basically any medical students who are interested can participate in this project.

Why should a medical student be involved in this ?

This project is a very good CV booster (national project, prestigious) and you can get paid at the same time. Students can include all the activities that they are involve in and PENSMA will reward all participants with a certificate of appreciation. This is very valueble esp to those students who are going overseas.

thank you

Amanda

IMU Charity Bazaar

Hey people, on the 3rd of December, there's going to be a charity bazaar held in IMU in a large scale. In conjunction with IMU's 20th Anniversary, this charity bazaar is aimed at raising funds for 6 homes namely: Rumah Love & Care Kajang, Rumah Shalom, Precious Children Home, Yayasan Sunbeam Home, Persatuan Kebajikan HOPE Worldwide KL, Association of Social Services and Community Development of Gombak District, Selangor (PSPK).

ALL faculty members will be involved with either selling food, doing arts & craft, have events such as adult yoga, kids yoga, and a performance "Changing of Masks" etc.

I'll be selling the booklet with coupons (to be used during the charity bazaar). One booklet has 10 coupons, and is priced at RM10 per booklet. And my task is to sell at least 50 of the booklets.

IMU's target is to raise around RM15,000. I really hope our batch can participate in this huge event and help reach that target! You're more than welcome to bring your family members along too for this event!

I'll be selling the coupon booklets on Friday (results day). Please comment on this post if you're interested, or contact me through 012-6592100.

Please ask them to use this opportunity wisely to improve, study hard and good luck to them for their re-sit.

I was told about this, today morning by prof Judson's PA, Ms Merrina.

Thank you.

He'll be here this Friday, 11th November to show you how he did it, his experience living in the States, and maybe he'll even share some tips on being a good medical student.

So for those you're eyeing to go to the States or are just interested in surgery or life as a professional healthcare physician, you'll definitely want to hear what he has to say!

Student Lounge

Dear Students of IMU,

The SRC and SSD are glad to inform you that with effective 3rd November 2011 the Student Lounge Opening Hours will be extended to 2am. This is only applicable to Thursday’s, Friday’s, Saturday’s and Sunday’s. As for the remaining days, the Student Lounge will close at 12am.

This arrangement is only for a trial period of ONE MONTH from Thursday, the 3rd of November until Sunday, the 4th of December. We still have to cross a few obstacles before this arrangement is made permanent. If we are able to follow the criteria during this trial period, then the Student Lounge will be permanently open until 2am on the four days as stated above.

The criteria are as listed below:

1) The Student Lounge will only be open until 2am on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
2) There must not be any damage to the equipment in the Student Lounge.
3) Only IMU STUDENTS are allowed to enter the Student Lounge especially on weekends.
4) Students should walk safely while walking back to Vista or their cars after 12.00 am onwards until 2 am and should not be harmed in any way while walking back during the trial period.

If any of these criteria are not adhered to during the trial period, this TEMPORARY arrangement will not be allowed to be made permanent and students will not be able to enjoy the benefits of extended Student Lounge opening hours.

So, students of IMU, the SRC has once again listened to your concerns and have acted upon them. Also I would like to stress on the importance on student safety once you guys leave the Student Lounge from 12am onwards, since it’s the main concern of the SRC and the SSD while agreeing to make this change and allow the trial period. Please try
to travel in packs or groups when leaving and STAY SAFE.

Thank you and have a great time everyone!

Cheers,
Simran

Please be informed that the PTPTN officers will be coming to IMU to collect the loan documents from students on:

Date  : 1 October 2011 (Saturday)
Time  : 9.00 am – 1.00 pm

Students who have received the online approval need to download and fill up their documents plus the supporting documents which need to be certified true copy.  These documents will be collected by the PTPTN officers on that day.  The students can bring their documents to me for checking to ensure that they are complete and in order.  You can also arrange a time slot and place with your batch mates for me to go and check the documents (She meant you guys should do it in a group).  This way would be easier.

Notes

To the students who subscribed to the photocopied lecture notes, I'm really sorry to inform you that we will not be photostating the notes for you all starting from the following Friday (12th August).

This is because lecturers in semester 2 tend to update their notes at the very last minute, which causes a lot of problems to us when we photocopy the notes.
Not only that, another reason being that the current subscribers for this semester is reducing as more and more students have been pulling out. We promised to photostat the notes as we initially recorded a total number of 60 students, however now it is less than 50.

Lastly, we hope you understand that it is really difficult to photostat the notes this semester, mainly due to time constrains. I've photostated one week of notes in advance already and honestly it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. So I truly apologize for not being able to fulfill the promise.

We will return the money to the groups that have paid, and you'll be getting the notes this week without having to pay for it as we'll use up the remaining funds from the previous semester.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

IMU's Email

Dear all,

I hope everyone has read and has gained access into your respective IMU outlook email accounts. The advantage of having an account NOT from a free domain provider (yahoo, gmail, hotmail) is that it is more trust worthy and some web applications only accept corporational or institutional email accounts. Furthermore, all official IMU notices such as class changes, fees related issues and End Of Semester (EOS) examination results will also be sent to your IMU email. If this is your first time trying to log into your IMU email, you should already see a few emails in your inbox including your results from last semester and notice to pay school fees.

IMU email is also very useful when you are applying for attachments to hospitals or labs as it is official.

So to recap, in order to log into your IMU email account, please first navigate to hotmail. Under your username, please use your given-name followed by your surname and school domain. For example, if your name is Lim Go Bi, your IMU email address will be "gobi.lim@student.imu.edu.my". By default, your email password should be password. Please contact the IT department at once if you are not able to log in with "password". Once you are in, please personalize your password under options.

Next, IMU forum is finally up and running. To visit, please go to "forum.imu.edu.my". The forum can only be registered using your IMU email address, it will not accept any other domains. Feel free to make full use of the forum to exchange ideas, voice out suggestions and to sell your second hand books, furnitures and to let or rent rooms. Any announcements will also be pasted there.

Enjoy =)

KJ Lee

Recommended Books (by senior from M109)

Hi! ME109 (sem5 going on to sem6)

Here are books I found useful while in sem 2-

Mama patho
good for understanding the fundamentals of pathology. difference between mama and papa (in my opinion) is the details regarding genetics, and minor diseases. personally i look more into HOW a pathology looks like in a clinical setting, so mama was sufficient.

Macleod's clinical Examination
lecturers in IMU and CSU sessions are based upon Macleod's methods. you are expected by lecturers to
a) look at the video
b) read through Macleod's (just browse thru)
c) embarrass yourself during session (because let's face it, nobody is perfect ;) )

the Atlas of Medically Important Parasites
will be very useful, in OSPE study. also, if you consult Dr. Stephan Ambu, he will tell you which to look out for. if you get him for parasito lab, you are in luck!

Microbiology made ridiculously simple
this book saved my life studying Microbiology. for microbiology, you would NEED a book to study because lectures will be very superficial.

LANGE Microbiology
the summary of microbes and USMLE-type question at the back is hugely helpful while studying / memorising. also this book will be useful throughout your medical course.

Immunology and pathology can be studied through notes - the lecturers are pretty good in explaining the fundamentals. however, its quite difficult to grasp the details of microbiology without a book. when in doubt, just buy microbio books. the rest can be bought later.

just my 2 cents. good luck in sem 2, and enjoy your studies! i hope it helped.

Notes

Hey people, since we've reached 60 subscribers this round, we'll be photocopying the notes as promised. Group leaders, please collect RM20 from the students subscribing and pass it to our treasurer, Kelvin Lau latest by next Thursday. Notes from Monday to Wednesday will not be printed as we wont be able to provide the notes in time. Truly apologize for that.

PS Group leaders, sorry to trouble you guys again this semester. For the group leaders who are not subscribing to the notes, you can always choose a representative (a student who subscribe to the notes) to collect the money from the students, and to collect the notes from us in future. Thank you so much for your cooperation all these while :)

Dharma Talk 2011 by Bro. Mui Han

This is a talk catered to clear your misconception about buddhism. First and foremost, Buddhism is not a religion, it is a teaching. It doesn't tell you how to lead your life but merely guide you through this journey.

Bro Mui Han is very good with Q & A. So do come and take a look. You are indeed welcome to attend.

Alumni from University of Edinburgh

Dear all,

One of our alumni from University of Edinburgh, Tham Keng Seng (M107 batch) is back in Malaysia. He is willing to receive any enquiries via e-mail from us all regarding queries like partnering to the medical schools in UKs, life experience in the UK and also in the university itself and he is also willing to give out advice to who those will be going to University of Edinburgh this coming September.

Please submit all your questions and comments to imusrc@gmail.com before the end of 7th of July 2011, the council will compile them up and send them to Keng Seng. His answers will then be posted up in the International Medical University (IMU) facebook page and in the council's blog.

My apologies that I won't be able to organize an alumni talk, this is due to most of you will be/are already having your semester break. It is not feasible as the size of the people attending would be VERY small.

Thank you.

Regards,
Denise

AIR Topic Marking Scheme

The email below is in response to questions regarding AIR topic marking scheme.

"Dear Jake and all,

Thank you for the email. The AIR submission is graded based on the three learning outcomes.
Among the three- ability to discuss and summarize mechanisms of actions of phytochemicals, weight a major proportion of the grades.
For many who score “C’, your work did not summarize well the mechanisms of actions of phytochemicals.
Appreciate the request for individual feedback; however unfortunately, it is not feasible as there are ~300 of you.
In most cases, I didn’t include a comment; unless the submission did not meet all three learning outcome or with some glaring mistakes.
Hope that clarifies.

Kind regards,
Dr megan"

Editorial Board IMU Advise Column

There is an advise column in the editorial boards magazine, Synapse. This column is specially for people who are facing trouble in their social life. If student faces a problem in his/her relationship or if they need some advise they can write to us anonymously.
If a student wishes to write to us for advise, he/she will need to send an email to imuedboard@gmail.com with the subject: Advise
This will be done anonymously and students can write to us using fake names.
for example:
" My name is Minnie. I have been dating Mickey since i joined in semester 1. Now I'm in semester 5. The problem is that I am doing PMS while Mickey is doing locally. I'm worried if long distance relationship will work. Should i break up with him?"

This is just an example.
Our advise columnists will reply the person with their advise and a randomly selected topic will be featured in Synapse's upcoming issue.
If students need any advise, feel free to write to us.
We give full assurance in maintaining confidentiality
Regards,
The Editorial Board

The volunteers will be helping to man the booth, get signatures on sandwich boards and participate in the flash mob! Each of the volunteers will receive a t-shirt as thanks for participating, and there will be fun and games and food and performances that everyone can enjoy. Tentatively we might have one practice for the flash mob but we will soon post a video of the dance up so you can learn it yourself in the comfort of your own home!

The details are as follows:

Date: Saturday, May 7th 2011
Time: Meet in front of IMU at 8:30am, estimated to end at 3pm

Stethoscope

I'll like to apologize personally for changing the plans about the stethoscope for so many times.   I know it's very confusing and messy. But here's the final plan (I hope).
I'll show you guys the sample tomorrow (ie 19th April). There's 13 colours to choose from: Black, Gray, Navy Blue, Caribbean Blue, Ceil Blue, Orange, Raspberry, Hunter Green, Seafoam Green, Burgundy, Purple, ALL BLACK (special edition) and BRASS COPPER (i hope i get this name right but it's also special edition.). For the normal colour (ie not special edition), it's RM200. It was RM210 initially but after some negotiation, we (Gina and me) managed to lower the price down a little bit. Anyway, for the special edition (ALL BLACK and BRASS COPPER), they are priced at RM275.
We'll need you guys to cooperate and place the order as soon as possible. It means that we need you to give your name, ID, contact number, colour of stethoscope and the money to us (Gina, Kelvin or me). Deadline: Friday of 22nd April 2011.

-Jake-

Stethoscope (update) - 18/4/2011

Hey everybody!
As you all know, we previously announced that we will be ordering the stethoscopes from Kamal bookstore. However, currently, EMO bookstore is willing to offer us at a cheaper price at RM200 per stethoscope compared to the previous price they offered, RM210. Apart from that, they are willing to give us 3 years of warranty for the stethoscopes you've ordered. So, finally, we came to a decision that we'll be ordering from EMO bookstore instead of Kamal Bookstore.

There will be an addition of the colour "Hunter Green" to the choice of colours  (http://www.steeles.com/images/3M/2208.jpg)
Not only that, there's a limited edition of the stethoscope, with the colour "Copper Black" and "All Black". It is priced at RM275 per stethoscope (Sample is available.)

Jake will be showing the samples tomorrow (19th April 2011) during lecture-interval or after lectures.
Again, a reminder to all, please pass your name, ID, contact details and choice of colour to either one of us (Jake, Kelvin & I) if you're interested in ordering the stethoscopes.

Thanks,
Gina.

Please vote for Social Concern Rep- Sheryl Chee!!! (Voting starts on 14th April)

SHERYL CHEE WEI LIN
M210

Running for: Social Concerns Representative

Why you should vote for me?
BECAUSE I CARE ! I’m an approachable and friendly person who is always willing to lend you a listening ear if you ever need any help. I‘m also able to accept feedback and criticisms if anyone has any complaints. I’m open to suggestions and so anytime you have a good idea, let me know and I will try my best-est to push for what YOU want. I feel that I am capable and am willing to take on the responsibility as your social concerns rep as I have had experiences in organizing events and dealing with student matters.

I certainly hope all of you will give me a chance to serve you. As most of the council members have already been elected, I understand what they are pushing for and I’m very supportive of the plans that they have for the student population. I’m an easy person to work with and you can trust that I will definitely do my best in everything J

Changes/New ideas I hope to push for
·       A calendar of events for all the events held by clubs and societies for that month. This way, everyone can know what is happening in IMU!
·       Student discounts at popular hangouts!
·       Snacks vending machines
·       Musical involving performing arts clubs, societies and anyone who’s got talent!
·       Movie screening nights!!
·       Bring back Friday Night! This was a tradition in the past in IMU and during this night, students and lecturers gather to dance, sing and karaoke.
·       Communicating with international students to see if improvements can be made for the Survival Guide
·       IMU Ball - a greater representation from ALL courses in the committee and attendance. This might probably be one of the last times we’d ever get to go to prom so let’s have a great time together!

PLEASE SUPPORT ME, XOXO
